BETTY'S BLOG

BETTY ALVAREZ HAM,

PRESIDENT OF CITY IMPACT

"Show me your ways, Lord"

5/10/2019

Dear Friends,

May 5, 1989, Kevin asked me to marry him.  He soon came to know one of my flat sides (yes, I do have one or two of them).  Reluctantly, I must confess I’m Directionally Impaired.  This issue of mine would affect many of our trips whether it be to the grocery store or longer vacation jots.  We would closely review our Rand McNally map and search out the best road to travel.

But on January 17, 1994, after years of steady growth, the final of the first 24 satellites was launched, and the GPS system was considered completely functional.  Today, fleet tracking taps into this exact same technology.  GPS stands for Global Positioning System.  GPS uses satellites that orbit Earth to send information to GPS receivers that are on the ground.  The information helps people determine their location.

You need to know this bit of technology saved our marriage (just kidding, but it did prevent many arguments).  Today, before I get in my car I program in my WAZE the address of the location that to drive to and voila, I not only get the directions but turn by turn and the estimated time of arrival.  I love this!

In December, when I was praying about the New Year’s theme and City Impact’s direction for 2019 – God placed on my heart Psalm 25:4-5, “Show me your ways, LORD, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”  The Lord in his wisdom knew I would need his grace, direction and empowerment.

Little did I realize that our SAFE (Student and Family Empowerment) Counseling Program that provides social and emotional assistance to Special Education students in elementary through high school, would more than double.  Today, we are seeing over 540 students per week.

Also, City Impact has proposed to the State, two collaborative efforts with law enforcement, probation and schools to work with a great amount of high-risk middle school and high school students.  Please pray with us about these funding opportunities.

Thank you so much for your continued faith in City Impact – your prayers and financial support means the world to us.

Because of Him,
Betty Alvarez Ham
President
