Dear Friends,

For those that know me personally you must be aware of a yearly event.  I must confess I have a yearly fall or I choose to say a “trip”.  Yet, I was made aware that with a trip you don’t necessarily go down to the ground. So, it is a fall.
This past year, the fall wasn’t limited to one time but twice.  I wouldn’t necessarily confess these incidences and, unfortunately, there were witnesses.

  • Fall #1 - I was working out with my FITZONE friends at the park when suddenly my foot stumbled over the curb and there I went - at least I knew to tuck and roll.  I was told that it resembled a gymnastic move - until Chelsea started laughing out loud and there went my pride

  • Fall #2 – I was delivering Christmas plants to a few of City Impact’s partners at Ventura’s County Government Center. I picked up two plants & my grand fur baby and proceeded to venture across the parking lot. It did cross my mind, “Louie, please don’t tangle up your leash” – the next thing I knew the plants flew out of my arms and sprawled across the parking lot.  By the time I landed potting soil was all over my face (which I didn’t realize until I returned home) and Louie was sitting on my chest. My next thought was I hope no one saw me when this kind gardener asked, “Are you ok?  Can I help you?” Then he proceeded to pick up the bits of succulents and scooped up the potting soil.

Last week, I have found myself pondering over the past ten months.  All the rises and falls, physically, emotionally, spiritually.  COVID has played havoc on our well-being and our sense of peace and security.  As I have talked with our staff they shared the struggles that our children, youth and families have experienced.  Depression has set in, anger has penetrated hearts, a surge in alcohol and substance abuse; basically hope has dwindled.  Falls are happening more frequently but we are not getting up.

As we entered 2021 chaos ensued – Oh Lord, helps us.  We need you so we can help others.  I am a woman of faith – and I do believe God will be ever present.  Yes, we will experience falls but with God’s grace we will rise again.  Thank you for your continued love, faithful support and prayers.

In His grace,
Betty Alvarez Ham
President
