Dear Friends,
Last week, Ventura County experienced COVID 2.0, another round of business closures, schools decided to begin the new school year with distance learning and Covid numbers increasing. A bit discouraged, a friend sent me this message: Sometimes I just want it to stop. Talk of Covid, protests, looting, brutality. I lose my way. I’ve become convinced, “this new normal” is real life. Then I met an 87 year old man, who talked about living through Polio, diphtheria, Vietnam protests and yet is still enchanted with life. He seemed surprised when I said, “2020 must be especially challenging for you.” “No”, he responded slowly looking at me straight in the eyes. “I’ve learned a long time ago not to see the world through printed headlines. I see the world through people that surround me. I see the world with the realization that we love big. Therefore, I choose to write my own headlines. “Husband loves wife today.” “Family drops everything to come be by grandmother’s bedside.” He then patted my hand, “Old man meets new friend.” His words collided with my worries, freeing them from the tether I’ve been holding tight. They floated away. I am left with a renewed spirit. My headline now reads “Woman overwhelmed by the spirit of kindness and the reminder that our capacity to love is never ending.” Today, My Headline reads: “Way maker, Miracle worker, Promise keeper, Light in the darkness. My God . . . That is who you are.” Friends, what is your headline today? I pray that our God continues to love and embrace you. Thank you for your support of City Impact - we do make a difference.
