"Ask people what they must do to get to heaven and most reply, "Be good." Jesus' stories contradict that answer. All we must do is cry, "Help!" God welcomes home anyone who will have him and in fact, has made the first move already. Most experts -- doctors, lawyers, marriage counselors -- set a high value on themselves and wait for clients to come to them. Not God." Philip Yancey Dear Friends, Some years ago, Chelsea informed me that I needed to board the Social Networking train. She said it would be a great way to stay in touch with colleagues and friends of the past. But, I must confess I was a bit reluctant to another form of technology that I would have to learn and ultimately embrace. Chelsea set up my Facebook and Instagram accounts, downloaded pictures and set up my profiles then I was ready to go. I began to troll and get some networking bites. The ones that caught my attention were from two young ladies, a junior and a senior in college, majoring in Liberal Arts – these once “knuckleheads” are in school to become teachers. I asked, "Why teach?" "Betty, there are many reasons, but one of them is you and Kevin. In our school groups, you taught us that we can succeed and become whatever we want to be. You guys loved us even when we were ‘knuckleheads’. Most of all, we remember coming to your house and having all of the Hams cook dinner and serve us -- that night ended with you telling us that Jesus really loved us. It is because of you that we know Jesus and we are here -- Gracias!" City Impact's methodology is based on Jesus' example of going into the community, whether it be a house, a school, a jail or a neighborhood, we are there. It is people like you that help us to do so by your continued love, prayers and financial support. Please know that you have made it possible for these two young ladies to hear God's message of love. They both have graduated from college and are teaching in urban communities. Thank you for empowering us to do the work of the Kingdom. Together for Him, Betty Alvarez Ham President |
